RAID-Z expansion feature This feature allows disks to be added one at a time to a RAID-Z group, expanding its capacity incrementally. This feature is especially useful for small pools (typically with only one RAID-Z group), where there isn't sufficient hardware to add capacity by adding a whole new RAID-Z group (typically doubling the number of disks). == Initiating expansion == A new device (disk) can be attached to an existing RAIDZ vdev, by running `zpool attach POOL raidzP-N NEW_DEVICE`, e.g. `zpool attach tank raidz2-0 sda`. The new device will become part of the RAIDZ group. A "raidz expansion" will be initiated, and the new device will contribute additional space to the RAIDZ group once the expansion completes. The `feature@raidz_expansion` on-disk feature flag must be `enabled` to initiate an expansion, and it remains `active` for the life of the pool. In other words, pools with expanded RAIDZ vdevs can not be imported by older releases of the ZFS software. == During expansion == The expansion entails reading all allocated space from existing disks in the RAIDZ group, and rewriting it to the new disks in the RAIDZ group (including the newly added device). The expansion progress can be monitored with `zpool status`. Data redundancy is maintained during (and after) the expansion. If a disk fails while the expansion is in progress, the expansion pauses until the health of the RAIDZ vdev is restored (e.g. by replacing the failed disk and waiting for reconstruction to complete). The pool remains accessible during expansion. Following a reboot or export/import, the expansion resumes where it left off. == After expansion == When the expansion completes, the additional space is available for use, and is reflected in the `available` zfs property (as seen in `zfs list`, `df`, etc). Expansion does not change the number of failures that can be tolerated without data loss (e.g. a RAIDZ2 is still a RAIDZ2 even after expansion). A RAIDZ vdev can be expanded multiple times. After the expansion completes, old blocks remain with their old data-to-parity ratio (e.g. 5-wide RAIDZ2, has 3 data to 2 parity), but distributed among the larger set of disks. New blocks will be written with the new data-to-parity ratio (e.g. a 5-wide RAIDZ2 which has been expanded once to 6-wide, has 4 data to 2 parity). However, the RAIDZ vdev's "assumed parity ratio" does not change, so slightly less space than is expected may be reported for newly-written blocks, according to `zfs list`, `df`, `ls -s`, and similar tools. Introduce BLAKE3 checksums as an OpenZFS feature This commit adds BLAKE3 checksums to OpenZFS, it has similar performance to Edon-R, but without the caveats around the latter. Homepage of BLAKE3: https://github.com/BLAKE3-team/BLAKE3 Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BLAKE_(hash_function)#BLAKE3 Short description of Wikipedia: BLAKE3 is a cryptographic hash function based on Bao and BLAKE2, created by Jack O'Connor, Jean-Philippe Aumasson, Samuel Neves, and Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn. It was announced on January 9, 2020, at Real World Crypto. BLAKE3 is a single algorithm with many desirable features (parallelism, XOF, KDF, PRF and MAC), in contrast to BLAKE and BLAKE2, which are algorithm families with multiple variants. BLAKE3 has a binary tree structure, so it supports a practically unlimited degree of parallelism (both SIMD and multithreading) given enough input. The official Rust and C implementations are dual-licensed as public domain (CC0) and the Apache License. Along with adding the BLAKE3 hash into the OpenZFS infrastructure a new benchmarking file called chksum_bench was introduced. When read it reports the speed of the available checksum functions. On Linux: cat /proc/spl/kstat/zfs/chksum_bench On FreeBSD: sysctl kstat.zfs.misc.chksum_bench This is an example output of an i3-1005G1 test system with Debian 11: implementation 1k 4k 16k 64k 256k 1m 4m edonr-generic 1196 1602 1761 1749 1762 1759 1751 skein-generic 546 591 608 615 619 612 616 sha256-generic 240 300 316 314 304 285 276 sha512-generic 353 441 467 476 472 467 426 blake3-generic 308 313 313 313 312 313 312 blake3-sse2 402 1289 1423 1446 1432 1458 1413 blake3-sse41 427 1470 1625 1704 1679 1607 1629 blake3-avx2 428 1920 3095 3343 3356 3318 3204 blake3-avx512 473 2687 4905 5836 5844 5643 5374 Output on Debian 5.10.0-10-amd64 system: (Ryzen 7 5800X) implementation 1k 4k 16k 64k 256k 1m 4m edonr-generic 1840 2458 2665 2719 2711 2723 2693 skein-generic 870 966 996 992 1003 1005 1009 sha256-generic 415 442 453 455 457 457 457 sha512-generic 608 690 711 718 719 720 721 blake3-generic 301 313 311 309 309 310 310 blake3-sse2 343 1865 2124 2188 2180 2181 2186 blake3-sse41 364 2091 2396 2509 2463 2482 2488 blake3-avx2 365 2590 4399 4971 4915 4802 4764 Output on Debian 5.10.0-9-powerpc64le system: (POWER 9) implementation 1k 4k 16k 64k 256k 1m 4m edonr-generic 1213 1703 1889 1918 1957 1902 1907 skein-generic 434 492 520 522 511 525 525 sha256-generic 167 183 187 188 188 187 188 sha512-generic 186 216 222 221 225 224 224 blake3-generic 153 152 154 153 151 153 153 blake3-sse2 391 1170 1366 1406 1428 1426 1414 blake3-sse41 352 1049 1212 1174 1262 1258 1259 Output on Debian 5.10.0-11-arm64 system: (Pi400) implementation 1k 4k 16k 64k 256k 1m 4m edonr-generic 487 603 629 639 643 641 641 skein-generic 271 299 303 308 309 309 307 sha256-generic 117 127 128 130 130 129 130 sha512-generic 145 165 170 172 173 174 175 blake3-generic 81 29 71 89 89 89 89 blake3-sse2 112 323 368 379 380 371 374 blake3-sse41 101 315 357 368 369 364 360 Structurally, the new code is mainly split into these parts: - 1x cross platform generic c variant: blake3_generic.c - 4x assembly for X86-64 (SSE2, SSE4.1, AVX2, AVX512) - 2x assembly for ARMv8 (NEON converted from SSE2) - 2x assembly for PPC64-LE (POWER8 converted from SSE2) - one file for switching between the implementations Note the PPC64 assembly requires the VSX instruction set and the kfpu_begin() / kfpu_end() calls on PowerPC were updated accordingly. Introduce BLAKE3 checksums as an OpenZFS feature This commit adds BLAKE3 checksums to OpenZFS, it has similar performance to Edon-R, but without the caveats around the latter. Homepage of BLAKE3: https://github.com/BLAKE3-team/BLAKE3 Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BLAKE_(hash_function)#BLAKE3 Short description of Wikipedia: BLAKE3 is a cryptographic hash function based on Bao and BLAKE2, created by Jack O'Connor, Jean-Philippe Aumasson, Samuel Neves, and Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn. It was announced on January 9, 2020, at Real World Crypto. BLAKE3 is a single algorithm with many desirable features (parallelism, XOF, KDF, PRF and MAC), in contrast to BLAKE and BLAKE2, which are algorithm families with multiple variants. BLAKE3 has a binary tree structure, so it supports a practically unlimited degree of parallelism (both SIMD and multithreading) given enough input. The official Rust and C implementations are dual-licensed as public domain (CC0) and the Apache License. Along with adding the BLAKE3 hash into the OpenZFS infrastructure a new benchmarking file called chksum_bench was introduced. When read it reports the speed of the available checksum functions. On Linux: cat /proc/spl/kstat/zfs/chksum_bench On FreeBSD: sysctl kstat.zfs.misc.chksum_bench This is an example output of an i3-1005G1 test system with Debian 11: implementation 1k 4k 16k 64k 256k 1m 4m edonr-generic 1196 1602 1761 1749 1762 1759 1751 skein-generic 546 591 608 615 619 612 616 sha256-generic 240 300 316 314 304 285 276 sha512-generic 353 441 467 476 472 467 426 blake3-generic 308 313 313 313 312 313 312 blake3-sse2 402 1289 1423 1446 1432 1458 1413 blake3-sse41 427 1470 1625 1704 1679 1607 1629 blake3-avx2 428 1920 3095 3343 3356 3318 3204 blake3-avx512 473 2687 4905 5836 5844 5643 5374 Output on Debian 5.10.0-10-amd64 system: (Ryzen 7 5800X) implementation 1k 4k 16k 64k 256k 1m 4m edonr-generic 1840 2458 2665 2719 2711 2723 2693 skein-generic 870 966 996 992 1003 1005 1009 sha256-generic 415 442 453 455 457 457 457 sha512-generic 608 690 711 718 719 720 721 blake3-generic 301 313 311 309 309 310 310 blake3-sse2 343 1865 2124 2188 2180 2181 2186 blake3-sse41 364 2091 2396 2509 2463 2482 2488 blake3-avx2 365 2590 4399 4971 4915 4802 4764 Output on Debian 5.10.0-9-powerpc64le system: (POWER 9) implementation 1k 4k 16k 64k 256k 1m 4m edonr-generic 1213 1703 1889 1918 1957 1902 1907 skein-generic 434 492 520 522 511 525 525 sha256-generic 167 183 187 188 188 187 188 sha512-generic 186 216 222 221 225 224 224 blake3-generic 153 152 154 153 151 153 153 blake3-sse2 391 1170 1366 1406 1428 1426 1414 blake3-sse41 352 1049 1212 1174 1262 1258 1259 Output on Debian 5.10.0-11-arm64 system: (Pi400) implementation 1k 4k 16k 64k 256k 1m 4m edonr-generic 487 603 629 639 643 641 641 skein-generic 271 299 303 308 309 309 307 sha256-generic 117 127 128 130 130 129 130 sha512-generic 145 165 170 172 173 174 175 blake3-generic 81 29 71 89 89 89 89 blake3-sse2 112 323 368 379 380 371 374 blake3-sse41 101 315 357 368 369 364 360 Structurally, the new code is mainly split into these parts: - 1x cross platform generic c variant: blake3_generic.c - 4x assembly for X86-64 (SSE2, SSE4.1, AVX2, AVX512) - 2x assembly for ARMv8 (NEON converted from SSE2) - 2x assembly for PPC64-LE (POWER8 converted from SSE2) - one file for switching between the implementations Note the PPC64 assembly requires the VSX instruction set and the kfpu_begin() / kfpu_end() calls on PowerPC were updated accordingly. Distributed Spare (dRAID) Feature This patch adds a new top-level vdev type called dRAID, which stands for Distributed parity RAID. This pool configuration allows all dRAID vdevs to participate when rebuilding to a distributed hot spare device. This can substantially reduce the total time required to restore full parity to pool with a failed device. A dRAID pool can be created using the new top-level `draid` type. Like `raidz`, the desired redundancy is specified after the type: `draid[1,2,3]`. No additional information is required to create the pool and reasonable default values will be chosen based on the number of child vdevs in the dRAID vdev. zpool create <pool> draid[1,2,3] <vdevs...> Unlike raidz, additional optional dRAID configuration values can be provided as part of the draid type as colon separated values. This allows administrators to fully specify a layout for either performance or capacity reasons. The supported options include: zpool create <pool> \ draid[<parity>][:<data>d][:<children>c][:<spares>s] \ <vdevs...> - draid[parity] - Parity level (default 1) - draid[:<data>d] - Data devices per group (default 8) - draid[:<children>c] - Expected number of child vdevs - draid[:<spares>s] - Distributed hot spares (default 0) Abbreviated example `zpool status` output for a 68 disk dRAID pool with two distributed spares using special allocation classes. ``` pool: tank state: ONLINE config: NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM slag7 ONLINE 0 0 0 draid2:8d:68c:2s-0 ONLINE 0 0 0 L0 ONLINE 0 0 0 L1 ONLINE 0 0 0 ... These options are leverages by zloop.sh to test a wide range of dRAID configurations. -K draid|raidz|random - kind of RAID to test -D <value> - dRAID data drives per group -S <value> - dRAID distributed hot spares -R <value> - RAID parity (raidz or dRAID) The zpool_create, zpool_import, redundancy, replacement and fault test groups have all been updated provide test coverage for the dRAID feature. Support custom build directories and move includes One of the neat tricks an autoconf style project is capable of is allow configurion/building in a directory other than the source directory. The major advantage to this is that you can build the project various different ways while making changes in a single source tree. For example, this project is designed to work on various different Linux distributions each of which work slightly differently. This means that changes need to verified on each of those supported distributions perferably before the change is committed to the public git repo. Using nfs and custom build directories makes this much easier. I now have a single source tree in nfs mounted on several different systems each running a supported distribution. When I make a change to the source base I suspect may break things I can concurrently build from the same source on all the systems each in their own subdirectory. wget -c http://github.com/downloads/behlendorf/zfs/zfs-x.y.z.tar.gz tar -xzf zfs-x.y.z.tar.gz cd zfs-x-y-z ------------------------- run concurrently ---------------------- <ubuntu system> <fedora system> <debian system> <rhel6 system> mkdir ubuntu mkdir fedora mkdir debian mkdir rhel6 cd ubuntu cd fedora cd debian cd rhel6 ../configure ../configure ../configure ../configure make make make make make check make check make check make check This change also moves many of the include headers from individual incude/sys directories under the modules directory in to a single top level include directory. This has the advantage of making the build rules cleaner and logically it makes a bit more sense.
